December 1st-Romania’s national holiday. On this day, Romanians celebrate their independence. But this year, and in years to come, we will celebrate the homecoming of a new family member: Elisabeta Sztoika. Until December 1, 2007, Lisa—as we call her—lived with a foster mother who had taken care of her since she was only 9 months old. She has no other family.
Lisa is the only daughter of her biological mother, who was also abandoned as a child and grew up in an orphanage in Ineu, a city close to Arad. At 18 years old, her mother was obligated to leave the orphanage and presently lives in a nighttime shelter. She’s now 25 years old, and works as a janitor for a local business.
