2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Gender equality in science is crucial for building a better future for all, yet women and girls continue to face barriers and biases in pursuing scientific careers all over the world despite women and girls representing half of the world’s population. The girl child, in Africa faces an even greater barrier because they have never been seen as equal to man in intelligence or being worthy of even receiving basic education.
The government and other international bodies have worked very hard to empower and educate girls in Kenya and in Africa but it is still an uphill battle. Here in Spring Valley it is a battle Pastor Stanley and tr. Alice know too well. Pastor Stanley and tr. Alice have had to involve the local authorities many times when guardians of some of our girls have tried to marry them of at an early age so that the family can get livestock as dowry in exchange for the girl.
The Talitha Koum dorms were built specifically to rescue and shelter girls who are at high risk for early marriages, or are being abused and raped at home. Pastor Stanley and tr. Alice take the education of girls very seriously and we have had several girls from Spring Valley top the national exams and some are even in university pursuing degrees like bio-medicine, computer engineering, journalism, teaching, nursing and hospitality management. For most of these girls they are the first in their families to receive a formal education and even attend college or university.
Through the help of God and you our partners, pastor Stanley and tr. Alive have worked hard throughout the years to rescue girls, feed them, educate them, clothe them and even house them in the girls’ dorms so that the girls’ lives can be saved, transformed and they can have a better future. With the right support, resources and opportunities the potential of the girls in Spring Valley is limitless. When girls are empowered the positive impact is felt in their families, communities and in the society.
